What is Onimusha: Way of the Sword?

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a dark fantasy swordplay action game from Capcom, set in early Edo-period Kyoto twisted by Malice. Players take on the role of Miyamoto Musashi, who wields the mystical Oni Gauntlet to absorb souls and cut down the demonic Genma.

Issen Counter

Break an enemy's posture to trigger Break Issen — an instant execution that dismembers foes and ends fights in a flash.

Soul Absorption

Yellow souls heal, blue souls power Oni Armaments, and red souls upgrade your sword and abilities in a risk-reward drain.

Oni Awakenings

Awaken Eye, Arm and Leg abilities to reveal hidden paths, smash obstacles and sprint through sealed walls.

Genma Menace

From Shuten Doji to Daidara and Dokyo's lab experiments, the Genma twist Kyoto into a demon-haunted battlefield.

Combat revolves around timing — parrying, deflecting and landing Issen instant-executions when you break an enemy's posture. Musashi grows by awakening hidden Oni abilities, upgrading his sword with red souls and unleashing powerful Oni Armaments.

FAQ

How do I trigger Issen?+

Issen is an instant execution that triggers when you break an enemy's posture, shown by the Rikido stance meter dropping to zero. The window is forgiving on regular Genma — press the attack button the moment the enemy staggers. Against bosses, Break Issen lets you choose between massive damage or a bigger soul haul, so time it when you can commit to the animation.

What are the three soul colors for?+

Yellow souls restore your health, blue souls fill the Oni gauge that powers Oni Armaments, and red souls are the upgrade currency for your sword and abilities. You absorb souls while moving, which leaves you briefly defenseless — so watch the battlefield before draining a dense crowd. Balancing the three colors is the core economy of every fight.

Does the demo save transfer to the full game?+

Yes. Playing the free demo and keeping your save data grants the exclusive Shutou charm with a bonus effect in the full game when Onimusha: Way of the Sword launches. The demo is available now on Steam, PS5 and Xbox, with a Windows demo planned later. Your progress carries over, so it is worth playing early.

Which edition should I buy?+

Standard Edition includes the base game plus pre-order bonuses. Deluxe adds the Deluxe Kit — charms, sword appearances, the Red Armor outfit and the Crimson Lotus gauntlet. Premium Deluxe adds the Premium Kit with extra outfits for Okuni and the Oni Lady, three Haori and a mini soundtrack. Buy Deluxe unless you want every cosmetic.

When does Onimusha: Way of the Sword release?+

Onimusha: Way of the Sword launches September 4, 2026, moved up three weeks from its original September 25 date. It releases on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam and Epic Games Store, and Nintendo Switch 2. A free demo and an official benchmark tool are already available on PC.

Who is the hardest boss?+

Shuten Doji, the giant Genma claiming to be the legendary demon, is widely expected to be the climactic challenge, fought at Mount Oe. Sasaki Ganryu, the rival swordsman with his own Oni Gauntlet, shapes up as the ultimate duel. Both demand mastery of parry timing, soul management and the Issen counter.

Is it on Nintendo Switch 2?+

Yes. Onimusha: Way of the Sword launches on Nintendo Switch 2 alongside PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and supports Joy-Con 2 motion controls for swordplay. The game runs on Capcom's RE Engine across all platforms, with a benchmark tool available on Steam and Epic to check PC performance.

Is Onimusha: Way of the Sword a soulslike?+

No — the director has explicitly said this is not a soulslike and not an open world. Combat is about the thrill of blade-on-blade timing: parries, deflects, the Issen counter and sword clashes. It is a modernized action game focused on the satisfaction of landing perfect counters rather than stamina management and corpse runs.
